In the Watchnerd world, few watches signal your progress out of the department store and into the forums like buying something from the Seiko SKX range. Something of a dive watch “rite of passage,” the drug of choice is often the SKX779/SKX781 (orange and black, respectively) dubbed “The Monster.” Years ago, after buying and very much loving an SKX007, I was on the hunt for my next diver and came across the unique and rather un-pretty SKX779 “Black Monster”.

I dug up this old article from 2012 to see if any of you had this watch. Over the weekend I stumbled upon one at a local shop and it was offered to me at what seems to be a steal. I checked on the inter webs and it's selling for far more than sticker price these days as the second gen monsters have become rare. My problem is that it is not on my "list" and I have no intentions of flipping any of the watches that I own. So I ask you... should I bite on this Vampire or just let it go??

The Seiko Monster is one of the coolest watches ever made; it resembles nothing else, and even foggy over at WLs picked up one not long ago (a very limited edition blue number, with the 6R15 movement--the so-called "Super Monster.") I was very tempted to grab one myself (LIW in New York had 'em) but I've owned, at least, four Monsters in the past, and ended up selling most of them off; they tend to hold value, and make an easy flip.

Truth be told I actually own that model and a few other variants...Invicta Abyss with miyota movement.
Decent sub 100 pro diver before the clown sizes were the norm.

Dude, look for an older airdiver, titanium. I’ll pay you for your help and send you the money ASAP if they have one. Take a picture so I know if it’s the right one. Should be in the older round plastic containers, but maybe not. Box isn’t important.

Mine did not come with a box because it was old stock. I'll check out what others they have and let you know.

Better than expected!

It's crazy. I recently looked into getting an orange monster for a friend and couldn't believe the prices for them now, High 800's to over 1,000. This for a watch I got for $139 in 2005.

Love this watch! Very versatile. Glad these enablers talked me into making the purchase. I'm also surprised at how expensive these watches are going for now.
