What Happens When You're 'Too Annoying' To Become Swiss
WNYC's Radiolab offers an in-depth look at an idiosyncratic Swiss law and what it says about the future of the country.

Way back in January 2017, a number of international publications started reporting on the story of a 42-year-old, would-be Swiss woman named Nancy Holten (The Atlantic did a particularly good job here). By "would-be Swiss" I mean that she is Dutch by birth, had lived in Switzerland since she was a small child, raised her family in Switzerland, and was finally attempting to become a naturalized Swiss citizen. However, due to an old-school law that allows community members to vote on whether or not their neighbors' applications for citizenship are approved, Holten was denied her citizenship multiple times. The reason? They found her to be "too annoying."
