Just bought this vintage Hilton

Post by svaglic » Mon Jun 13, 2022 5:25 am

Now I wait for arrival.
Look at that dial, wow.
I like old Hilton’s, they have some unique dials. I guess they were cheapies back in the day because they are cheapies today, but I like them. I was searching for one with a fontomatic movement when I found this.

Many a Watch God raise their ale filled gourds in salute to your fine a$$ pick up..they all give it 2 spears up, especially that swell looking dial face!!..
Ebels are a lot like women that lack a low cut dress that zips up the side...neither get the love that they deserve...

I love the old dials, the work involved seems head and shoulders above what is offered today. Like Hilton was an economy brand and yet they came up with some great dial designs.

Got it today

Well, I found out that Hilton was basically, back then, what Invicta of today is.

https://www.keepthetime.com/blog/hilton ... ainspring/

Despite the “Swiss Made” on the dial, upon cracking open the caseback on the example timepiece pictured here, we found it stamped with the following: G.T. Co. Hong Kong.

Sound familiar? Seems they skirted Swiss back then too.

The following info is from user JimH on watchuseek:

“Hilton was a company based in New York City. Hilton distributed watches usually made with 17 jewel Swiss movements and cases from a variety of sources including Hong Kong. It was a marketing company rather than a manufacturer. Hilton got in trouble with the FTC in the early 60s over misleading pricing and claims for their watches (25 jewel but only 17 functional, marked Swiss Made).”

Silly me, I always wondered why Hilton was so cheap, even with the nice looking textured dials. Now I know.
Oh well, it is still a nice looking dial and that’s why I got it. I am a sucker for textured dials, I want them all. Fortunately Hilton has been a cheap obsession.

Regardless of the history it's still a damn sharp watch
I’ll keep buying them. The price is right for them.

At first, I thought Paris Hilton had started a line of watches. Or maybe her daddy's hotel chain was putting a watch on your pillow if you coughed up enough scratch.
