Idiot ruins his 1680 Red Submariner.
He had a 1680 submariner with the sought after red font with a beautiful patina and sent it in to have the dial replaced because it had no lume. Congratulations jackass, you paid someone a butt-load of money to make your submariner less valuable.

This is probably my favourite among the watches I own. I inherited it from my maternal Grandpa, who was a merchant marine captain, and bought the Sub with his first bonus as an officer. According to my grandmother, the bonus was because he stood up to the East Coast mafia at some point during the 1960s or 70s and the shipping company was so grateful, they wrote him a fat check. He picked up the watch in Singapore with the money.
He and I were exceptionally close, and he told me as a child that the watch would someday be mine. I didn't realize he meant after his death and for many years after he died I refused to have anything to do with the watch (my aunt, his daughter, took care of it until I was ready).
After a while, as a grown man, I decided I could finally have my grandpa's watch, and I asked my aunt if I could have it. She no only happily gave it over to me but also paid for its first servicing in about 20-odd years. I elected not to keep the red dial in the watch, because the lume on it is completely kaput. I also asked them not to polish the case and bracelet because a 40-year old tool watch has no business gleaming like it just came off a display case.
