Anyone know about this Angelus Automatic Watch??????

Post by toizrit » Mon Jul 25, 2022 6:11 pm

Guys- I have a small collection of vintage watches. I collect vintage fountain pens and from time to time I get watches in with the pens. This one the original owner said he parents got for him around 1968 or so maybe 70’s he could not remember. He said his parents got it in Europe when they did a vacation and gave it to him as a gift when he was a kid. I know the brand is a very respected higher End brand but all my searches come up with zero pictures or information on this watch. Anyone know if it? It’s model name? Collectible or not really? I am really curious. I like the watch but just frustrated I can’t find anything on it for history, past sales anything….. thanks Jon

I’m sorry, usually I’m pretty good at finding watches, but this one ate my lunch.
I would suggest doing a weekly search on Google images and ebay, one will turn up eventually.
I guess that means it’s not common and it has a good name, so it has that going for it. Maybe there is a model number on the inside of the case back. A jeweler can open it and see if there is.

Lots of super history on the vintage Chrono's with the page links here. Thanks guys. Still hoping someone knows more about this watch or some reference point. The age I don't think aligns with 1980's. I say that as the seller that I got it from got it as a gift from his parents when he was about 10-12 years old. This would put the watch at around 1969-1971 based on the age of the person I got from. Man, lots of smart minds and collectors here, hoping someone and link to someone who knows. Driving me banana's.

Any way to get a better picture of the case back? I’ve narrowed it down but this is a zombie company.
Ok, sorry for the slow response but I was traveling and needed to get home to get my tools to open the back. So, the inside of the automatic movement just says 25 Jewels Swiss Made. The back of the case says. 274 Automatic. Does any of this help. I am struggling. Not sure if i have a $100 watch or a watch worth considerably more. It is odd. See pics.

Your movement is an eta 2783.
https://17jewels.info/movements/e/eta/eta-2783/

It debuted in 1974, so that is the oldest your watch can be.
Reading the articles on the brand is quite interesting. Reading this one paragraph from the last link you posted do you think it this eta-2783 is in the same era. Possibly they didn't list this ETA-2783 as they just list 2512 and 2510:

Wristwatch models sold by
Angelus around 1960 were often equipped
with the hand-winding calibre AS 1686. Other
wristwatches, which were made by Angelus in
the 1960ies and 70ies, were equipped either
with the ETA-calibres 2512, 2510, or the cali-
bres Felsa 22 or Peseux P 7000

The article says it debuted around 1974. I was thinking the 2783 started out first with 17 jewels and got 25 later on, I’m not sure though.
If you look at your first photo of the movement and zoom in on the left side, right under the gold wheel you can see 2783 and the rotor says 25 jewels.

I don’t think you have a hundred dollar watch, but I have no idea on what it’s top value is. It almost looks NOS, it’s in great shape. I think it’s late 70’s and wouldn’t be surprised if it is 80’s.
It’s only going up in value too, good movement, good shape, good name brand.

Try contacting a name in the articles links and see if they would have info.
