Update: Having bothered to watch the video, I am, somewhat surprisingly, gobsmacked. I had been been close, several times, close to ordering one of the Sharp Edged GMTs from Seiko.
In the past, I have had to explain myself many times regarding Valjoux chronograph movements and my quite unacceptable experience with them. I have owned, now, four 7750s and a heavily modified 7753; of those, now, three have gone wrong very shortly after buying them. Two of them had issues with the crowns/winding, and one had issues with the chrono reset. This means that well over half of the the Valjoux chrono watches i have owned have failed, in one way or another, very soon after purchase, which means that I am highly unlikely to ever buy a watch with a Valjoux movement again.
Now, that we have photographic evidence of Seiko doing the same fucking thing, well, I can't well get around this. This is not acceptable.
There has never been a bigger Seiko fanboi than I. I still think that the SKX007 is one of the greatest, most iconic dive watches in history. Alas, history begins today, and if Seiko is asking well over a grand US for a watch, they'd better fucking make sure it's fucking perfect.
Well, that's just it.
I am not here to bash Seiko - I still have three, I believe. Two are in rotation and the other is an old gift from the missus. Oh, and that one was one of the early Kinetics, most of whom crapped out after about 18 months after being hyped as basically running forever. Then I bought another - same problem. You know, the old "that one was just a fluke" mindset. More recently, a more modern Kinetic also crapped out prematurely. Enough with that whole concept. Can you blame me?
I can only put my dollars into stuff that works. Unlike conj, I've had good luck with 7750s, albeit because I baby 'em and wind 'em very meticulously, but I do have an 11-year-old Hamilton with one that's perfect. And I tend to gravitate toward Sellita and ETA autos - I have yet to have a problem with even one, and I have picked up a shit ton of watches over the years.
So this has less to do with Seiko than it has to do with value. Despite my "accomplishments" in life, I have busted my ass for every dollar I have earned and I make hobby purchases with a lot of consideration in advance. Cripes, it was two years of scrimping and planning before I bought a Rolex.
I used to know the Seiko HQ in Mahwah, NJ very well. Knew people that worked there, and they were nice people who cared about the products. I don't know what's happened since those days, but it's obvious there's a different mindset now.
I just read that at a Frito-Lay plant in Kansas, a worker literally died and the other employees were told to leave the body there and get back to their work stations. I also read that Frito-Lay also works their employees there on forced overtime and 84-hour weeks; some workers went more than five months without a day off. Not a vacation:
A day off.
No Sunchips or Seikos for me. I see other people not getting value for money - or ripped off by big companies - and that's it. Rear view mirror. After-life kidz.
As for Fritos, well,
ugh:
