Hands-on Rolex Datejust 36

Post by JAS1125 » Thu Apr 18, 2019 12:02 pm

Beautiful watch....I have the Alpha homage, which is a close as I will get to it :(

During Baselworld 2019, Rolex presented a steel version of the classic Datejust 36 – well, the Steel/Rolesor version with white gold bezel to be precise. A sibling of the Datejust 36 released last year in Everose gold and steel, the new Datejust is a more affordable proposal with white gold used exclusively on the bezel. With its proverbial mix of strength and elegance and its appealing unisex case size fitted with the latest generation Rolex movement, we are convinced that this particular iteration of the three-hand Datejust is one of most versatile and desirable of them all.

Wow. Just glancing at the photo, I would have thought that was a vintage watch...

...which leads me to implore anyone with an eye for a DJ: Try the used/vintage market. I lucked into my own 36mm DJ 1601 from 1970; picked it up for a fraction of the current list prices (at a watch brick and mortar, no less), and I'd reckon its overall presence is not all that different than the model listed here. Yeah, the Jubilee bracelet long disintegrated (or stretched out), but I picked up an Everest strap designed for Rolex. Those with patience should keep looking around if you like the Datejust look - you'd be amazed what $2,500 to $4,000 will get you. The Datejusts (with servicing) hold up well, and because the style changes only slightly, few would look at your wrist and think "old watch."

No lie. And don't get me wrong - the new ones are just Spiff City. The DJs are that nice spot between a sports watch and a dress watch - wear the damn thing with anything.

I must have had at least 4 Datejust-esque watches (2 below), until I could get an actual one - so big DJ fan here.

Sadly the vintage 36 millimeters were just too small and try as I did (many times) I just couldn't get past it.

I had to wait past the horrid Datejust 2 for the Datejust 41 that was more in keeping with (but just short of all), the vintage design cues.

More than worth the wait.

Even my Grand Seiko purchased after the DJ41 is effectively a DJ design homage IMPO

So, I *just* can't get enough it seems. Such is a timeless classic design.
