Have several mineral X-tals but I feel saphire is overall the best choice where scratches are involved.
Ofcourse there is a lot to say for mineral or even acrylic when vintage watches are involved.
I would now even not buy the watch if there is no saphire X-tal installed.
All my saphire are 100% scratch free while I have a few mineral X-tals with scratches.

I prefer sapphire crystals. I manage a cotton gin and one day I may be pushing paper and the next minute I may have to work on a piece of equipment. I have caught myself with my Tag on working on a greasy piece of equipment banging it around and other than a nick on the band or case the sapphire crystal was unscathed. A good cleaning and its in good shape. If I can think, I do try to remember to remove my watch. But it doesn't always happen. Thank God for sapphire crystals.

I prefer sapphire crystals over mineral crystals too. I've never had a problem with either though. It's probably a personal perception thing where I believe sapphire is higher end.

I have never shattered sapphire, sure I guess it can happen. BUT I always scratch the heck out of mineral, I refuse to by mineral. I am too hard on my watches and mineral for me just does not work out well. I hear a lot more "grumblings" about mineral than I ever have of sapphire. Sapphire IMHO.

Why do you think WalMart uses sapphire crystals on their counter top bar code scanners at checkout? Do you think those ever get hit with dropped merchandise? Thickness is important, of course. Sapphire all the way.

Sapphire crystal over here.
I even go so far as to change the mineral crystal on my vintages if I find a generic sapphire fitting the watch.
Sapphire crystal has a improved a lot when it comes to shatter-resistance over the years.
All EL watches come with sapphire crystal only.

Of the two sapphire--but I'll also choose acrylic over mineral crystal since, although it scratches easiest of the three, it's the easiest to effectively fix.
I've passed on a lot of watches only because there was no sapphire or acrylic option at the time of purchase.

Flame fusion rocks! It is the best of both worlds. That has to be true since I heard it on TV.
Otherwise, I would take sapphire every time. But sapphire is ridiculously expensive and overrated according to TV gurus.

Although I try to avoid it, I have scratched a number of mineral crystals.
Certainly prefer sapphire.

Depends.
Remember that sapphire, being a denser material, is more brittle.
Also, the way a sapphire crystal is placed on a watch can have a large impact.
If the sapphire crystal is elevated above the case, then it'll easily chip, far faster than a mineral crystal would.
I also prefer sapphire, but not when it's elevated.
